Jeni's Reports More Problems With Listeria

Columbus-based Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams says it is again closing its production facility and scoop shops after finding listeria for a second time. A statement from the company says officials discovered the Listeria through routine swabbing as part of its monitoring program. Officials are investigating where and how it may have re-entered the facility. Jeni's closed the Columbus facility, stores in six states and pulled product worth 2.5 million dollars off the shelves in April  when listeria turned up in random tests.  The source of that contamination turned out to be a pint filling machine in the Columbus facility.  The company destroyed 265 tons of product, closed and cleaned the kitchens, and invested in equipment and new procedures to guard against future problems. The company says all of the ice cream served in its shops since reopening May 22  is Listeria-free. A U.S. Food and Drug Administration probe released in May said there was inadequate testing and cleaning at the facility before listeria was found.  The FDA released the investigative report after a Freedom of Information request from The Associated Press. The report said Jeni's managers did not have an adequate sampling and testing program and were not sufficiently sanitizing some surfaces, including the floors.
