John Doe Charge In 1994 Case

A Franklin County grand jury has indicted an unknown suspect in an unsolved rape case, marking the first such indictment in the county's history. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien says the case involves the assault of a Columbus woman in July 1994. He says the indictment of the DNA profile listed under the name "John Doe" allows the case to remain open.

O'Brien says his office has spoken with the victim, and she supports the decision.

Delaware, Montgomery and Cuyahoga counties have already used John Doe DNA profiles in cases where the suspect has not been identified, and state courts have upheld the indictments.
