Judge Orders State To Sponsor Charter School Facing Closure

A Hamilton County judge has ordered the Ohio Department of Education to sponsor a charter school in order to keep it operating. The judge says the department made it difficult for the VLT Academy in Cincinnati to find a sponsor. The judge says closing the school would harm its 600 students. The department will have to provide nearly 300 thousand dollars to make sure teachers and staff are paid in the next school year. VLT's sponsor declined to renew its contract, leaving the school facing closure. The judge says the department failed to warned two potential sponsors about taking on the school, although its superintendent says its academic performance did not trigger automatic closure.
