Republican former Ohio Governor John Kasich delivered a primetime address last night at the Democratic National Convention.

He called on fellow Republicans and independents to support presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Kasich says he's putting country over party. Ohio Public Radio's Andy Chow reports.

In a pre-recorded message, Kasich says he's proud of being a Republican. But, he says, president Donald Trump has created division and dysfunction.

Kasich: "What I have witnessed these past four years belies those principles. Many of us can't imagine four more years going down this path. And that's why I'm asking you to join with me to choose a better way forward."

In a message directed to Republican and independent voters, Kasich assured Biden would not, quote "turn sharp left" for more progressive policies.

Republican Ohio Congressman Bob Gibbs says conservatives should continue to align with Trump who, as Gibbs says, has a proven track record of economic success.

Gibbs: "I would just not pay attention to the noise out there from John Kasich and others. And just think of where we were with this pandemic and where we're headed."
