Lawmakers Hear Testimony On Ohio Police Training Changes

Ohio would boost the amount of training to become a police officer and require all candidates for law enforcement jobs to have a high school diploma under legislation being considered at the Statehouse.

The measures follow recommendations for upgrading police training and standards that emerged from committees convened by Attorney General Mike DeWine and Governor John Kasich in the wake of protests over fatal police shootings. The legislation would lift the current cap of 650 required hours, a move allowing the state's police training commission to set a higher amount yet to be determined. The House Community and Family Advancement Committee heard testimony Tuesday afternoon.
