Local Babysitter Sentenced In Child's Drug Overdose Death

Franklin County Sheriff's Office

A Franklin County judge has sentenced an east side babysitter to eight years in prison for the death of a 12-year-old boy in her care.

61-year-old Shiela Hutchins was sentenced on involuntary manslaughter charges. She was also sentenced an additional18 months on drug trafficking charges. The Franklin County Coroner's office ruled the July, 2017 death of Kanye Champelle was caused by an accidental overdose of fentanyl. Prosecutors say Hutchins was babysitting five children during a birthday sleepover when she left her apartment to run errands. Champelle then ingested the drug he found on top of a refrigerator and was found unresponsive.
