Local Health Board Schedules Vote On Farm Animal Regulations

Columbus Board of Health members have amended proposed regulations for keeping chickens in residential backyards. The amendments lower the proposed permit fees from 150 to 100 dollars and allow more room for chicks. The amendments were prompted by public input. Health officials say they would be allowed to confiscate animals that endanger public health or safety. The rules were prompted by hundreds of complaints over barnyard animals and their waste, as more people became urban farmers. The board will consider the amendments at its meeting on November 15.
