Military Gives Thousands Of Pieces Of Surplus Equipment To Ohio Law Enforcement

State records show the U.S. military has given armored vehicles, assault rifles and thousands of other types of surplus military equipment to Columbus police and other Ohio law enforcement agencies in recent years. Nearly 49 hundred assault rifles and 36 mine-resistant vehicles were handed out in Ohio since 2006 under a U.S. Department of Defense program. Delaware police received a grenade launcher to fire tear gas canisters. Such programs have garnered attention recently in light of violence in Ferguson, Missouri, where the police department had acquired two armored Humvees and other military gear underthe program.
