More Ohio Communities Vote To Curb Corporate Political Power

Nov 7, 2014

Voters in Mentor and Chagrin Falls on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved ordinances calling on Congress to enact a constitutional amendment declaring corporations are not people and money does not equate to free speech.

The measures come in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling. Becky Thomas organized the ballot initiative in Chagrin Falls.

Dave Lima helped organized the measure in Mentor. He says 90 percent of the candidates who have the most corporate money win elections.

Voters in Brecksville, Newburgh Heights, Defiance and Cleveland Heights previously approved similar ballot measures. City Councils in Athens, Oberlin, Fremont, Barberton, Lakewood and South Euclid previouly passed similar resolutions.
