New Columbus Library Policy Encourages Reporting Of Suspected Child Abuse

The Columbus Metropolitan Library board has unanimously approved a new policy aimed at child abuse. Although librarians have a responsibility to protect the identities and reading habits of patrons, the new policy encourages library employees to report suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to their superiors. Library Director Pat Losinski says there was no specific incident that prompted the policy, which he called a "pre-emptive matter." Under the new policy, library employees are to fill out a report within 24 hours of a possible incident. The report will include the identities of both children and parents, their address and details of the issue. If necessary, reports will be forwarded to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services or police.
