No New Money Allocated By State To Fight Toxic Algae Blooms

Ohio's plan to fight the phosphorous runoff feeding toxic algae blooms in western Lake Erie leans heavily on programs established in the last few years. The strategy obtained by The Associated Press calls for additional water monitoring and more oversight of existing programs, but allocates no new money for targeting the blooms. It is the state's blueprint for reaching a 40-percent reduction goal it pledged to reach along with Michigan and Ontario within the next 10 years. The phosphorous comes from farm fertilizers, livestock manure and sewage treatment plants.
