Petition Seeks To End Practice Of Armed Deputies In Juvenile Courtrooms

Franklin County Sheriff's Office

An online petition seeks to have Franklin County Sheriff's deputies stop carrying weapons in county juvenile courtrooms.

The petition was sparked by the January 17th shooting of 16-year-old Joseph Haynes by deputy Richard Scarborough. The local police union says the move would be a mistake. Sheriff Dallas Baldwin has declined to discuss whether court security measures are being reviewed, citing the ongoing Haynes investigation. Scarborough's personnel records show he has met or exceeded expectations for dealing with dangerous situations since his hiring 10 years ago.
