Police Union Chief Wants Tamir Rice Family To Spend Some Settlement Money On Firearms Education

Rice Family

The city of Cleveland has reached a 6 million dollar settlement of a lawsuit over the death of a 12-year-old black boy shot by a white police officer while playing with a pellet gun in November 2014. Mayor Frank Jackson says the city will pay the family of Tamir Rice 3 million dollars in each of the next two years.

The wrongful death suit against two officers and the city alleged the officers acted recklessly when they confronted Rice and shot him an instant after their cruiser arrived on the scene. A grand jury declined to bring charges against the officers. Cleveland police union president Steve Loomis says the Rice family should spend part of the money on educating children about the dangers of handling real and replica firearms. Rice family attorney Subodh Chandra says Loomis' comments reflect "all that is wrong with Cleveland's police division."
