Archaeologists say they have discovered six graves at Upper Arlington High School from a historic cemetery established by a former slave.
Officials found one fully intact grave along with two partially exhumed and three fully exhumed graves. They may belong to ancestors of Pleasant Litchford, a blacksmith and former slave who bought his freedom and moved from Virginia to Central Ohio. Litchford once owned the land where Upper Arlington High School, Northam Park, and Tremont Elementary School now stand. Litchford died in 1879, and 30 graves were moved from his family cemetery to a new site when the land began being developed in the 1950s.
