Republican Ohio Senate lawmakers hoping to give the state one of the most far-reaching abortion restrictions in the nation fell one vote short of overriding the governor's veto yesterday.
The bill would have banned abortions once the first fetal heartbeat is detected. Term-limited Republican Governor John Kasich had said in his veto message the bill is unconstitutional. The Ohio House voted to override the veto. The following Senate vote was 19-13, short of the 20 votes needed for an override. Kasich vetoed similar legislation in 2016.
