State Recommends Fining Columbia Gas For Upper Arlington Home Explosion

Public Utilities Commission of Ohio investigators recommend Columbia Gas be fined 400 thousand dollars for a gas explosion that destroyed an Upper Arlington house and damaged others nearby. The commission says the company left an abandoned and mismarked gas line connected to the main line. A city water company employee thought it was a water line and turned on the gas, which filled the unoccupied house in the 34 hundred block of Sunningdale Way in late March. Columbia Gas officials contended they never received an order to disconnect the line decades ago. The full commission must vote on the recommendation.
