State Says CCS Academic Struggles Continue

WCBE files

The Ohio Department of Education says the Columbus City Schools met only 2 of 24 academic performance standards last year. Jim Letizia has more.

The department's report cards of districts and individual schools released this morning ranks Columbus as failing in five areas, below average in one, average in two, and excelling in two other areas. Overall, that is lower than the rankings the department gave last year. The report cards show the district's attendance rate dropped for the third consecutive year. 92 percent of students were in class in the 2014 year, down from 77 percent in 2013, and below minimum state requirements. Attendance data submitted to the state for the last three school years had been manipulated by district administrators. Report cards covering those years were recalculated and new grades for Columbus school buildings were assigned. Many saw declines. The cards also show 64 percent of students were proficient in reading in 2013, up from 62 percent in 2012. 77 percent of students in the 2013 class graduated, down from 79 percent in 2012. Report cards for every district and school building in Ohio are posted on the department's website - education.ohio.gov.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
