2020 Ohio Presidential Primary

COVID-19 closed down the March primary election, and lawmakers extended the absentee ballot deadline to late April.  Voter rights groups are asking state lawmakers to reform voting laws now, to avoid confusion before the November election. But Statehouse correspondent Jo Ingles reports they are not necessarily on the same page when it comes to which reforms should be made.

Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose says Ohio needs to take the application process for mail-in ballots online, agree to pay postage on return applications and ballots and make other voting-law changes to assure the November presidential election runs smoothly.

Just under 25 percent of Ohio's registered voterscast ballots in Tuesday's primary election, which was postponed from March due to coronavirus concerns. 

The Ohio School Boards Association says voters Tuesday approved a smaller percentage of school tax issues on the primary ballot than in the previous primary election.

The bill that made some changes across state law related to coronavirus also set a new ending for the Ohio primary, after polling places were shut down just hours before election day.

Among the many things Ohio lawmakers will have to decide when they come back to the Statehouse this week is what to do with Ohio’s primary election, delayed last week because of coronavirus concerns. Statehouse correspondent Jo Ingles reports.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says the late night order to close voting locations for Tuesday's primary election was to make it clear that in-person voting would be delayed.

While establishing an official replacement date for Ohio's primary requires legislative action, registered voters who have not voted can cast an absentee ballot. 

The Ohio Department of Health has ordered the polls closed today, delaying the state's presidential primary until June 2nd.
