The Ohio police officer who shot and killed Andre Hill will stand trial next spring, a judge decided Monday.

The announcement that the federal government will review the Columbus police department and provide technical assistance in areas such as training and recruitment is a far cry from the last time the Justice Department examined the agency and signals the city’s willingness to cooperate, analysts say.

Extensive publicity over last year’s fatal shooting of Andre Hill by a Columbus police officer won’t prevent the now-fired officer from receiving a fair trial in central Ohio, a judge ruled Wednesday in denying a request to move the trial.

The former Columbus police officer who shot and killed Andre Hill wants the trial moved, saying publicity has made it impossible for a fair proceeding locally.

Ohio’s capital city will pay a $10 million settlement for the family of Andre Hill, a Black man who was fatally shot by a white Columbus police officer in December as he emerged from a garage holding a cellphone, the Columbus city attorney announced Friday.

The fired Columbus police officer accused of killing Andre Hill pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of reckless homicide Wednesday.

A grand jury in Ohio’s capital city on Friday added a criminal charge of reckless homicide against the former Columbus police officer who fatally shot a Black man holding a cellphone.

The former police officer accused of killing Andre Hill interacted “two to three” times with Hill before the shooting and became concerned he was a burglar, the officer’s attorney said Friday, as he defended his client with never-before-heard details about the night of the fatal shooting.

The family of Andre Hill, the unarmed black man killed in December by a white Columbus police officer, say they are relieved that Adam Coy has been indicted and arrested for his murder.

Columbus officials say they plan to invest at least $4.5 million in new body-worn cameras for police and require officers to use them correctly.

Records show the white now former Columbus police officer who shot and killed unarmed black man Andre Hill had previously been disciplined for excessive use of force.  

The union that represents Columbus police officers says it hasn't decided yet whether to formally challenge the termination of an officer who killed an unarmed man three days before Christmas.  But it is filing a grievance over the way officer Adam Coy's firing was handled.

Civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton is scheduled to deliver a eulogy at a memorial service Tuesday for the unarmed black man shot and killed by a white Columbus police officer in December.
