Cesar Sayoc, the Florida bodybuilder and nightclub bouncer who mailed inoperative pipe bombs to prominent Democrats and media figures seen as critical of President Trump, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a federal judge in New York on Monday.

Former President Barack Obama weighed in on the mass shootings this past weekend in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, saying on Monday that Americans "should soundly reject language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalizes racist sentiments."

In a statement released on Twitter, Obama did not mention President Trump by name, but his reference seemed clear.

President Trump, responding Monday to the deadly weekend shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that killed 31 people, condemned white supremacy and called for the death penalty for mass murderers and domestic terrorists.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said the nation is "overcome with shock, horror and sorrow."

Dayton Police identified the shooter outside a Dayton nightclub in the early moring hours Sunday as 24-year old Connor Betts.

An Ohio State University police officer who stopped an attack on campus in 2016 was honored by President Trump Wednesday at a ceremony recognizing first responders. 

The FBI is investigating some 850 cases of domestic terrorism and considers it serious and persistent threat, the FBI's Michael McGarrity told the House Committee on Homeland Security on Wednesday.

McGarrity and his fellow national security officials then went on to explain to committee members why the U.S. doesn't have an explicit law allowing the federal government to criminally charge extremists with domestic terrorism.

A Coast Guard officer charged with gun and drug offenses, and also accused of drawing up a hit list of news anchors and Democratic politicians, could be released from pretrial detention if a supervision program can be worked out, a federal judge said Thursday.

Prosecutors describe Lt. Christopher Hasson, 49, as a "domestic terrorist" and believe he intended to carry out a major attack. However, the charges against him are for illegal possession of weapons and drugs, and Hasson has pleaded not guilty.

A U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant was arraigned Monday on gun and drug charges in a case authorities say linked him to a plot to killed several prominent Democrats and broadcast journalists.

Christopher Hasson, 49, pleaded not guilty to charges of illegal possession of firearm silencers, possession of firearms by a drug addict and unlawful user, and possession of a controlled substance.

The U.S. Marshals Service says a man accused of threatening a mass shooting in Michigan has been arrested at a residence in Youngstown.

A 49-year-old Coast Guard lieutenant charged with stockpiling weapons and drugs is being described as a "domestic terrorist" who was planning "to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country," according to court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Maryland on Tuesday.
