The Ohio Highway Patrol is reporting an increase in traffic fatalities over the Christmas holiday period.

There has been an increase in the number of deaths on Ohio's roads due to distracted driving. At least 51 more people have died already this year. That's why the Ohio Highway Patrol will be stepping up enforcement efforts on the state’s roads this holiday season.

The Ohio Highway Patrol says 15 people died in traffic accidents over the Thanksgiving holiday period. 

A Sherwood Middle School 6th grader was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident on the east side this morning.  

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission says central Ohio traffic deaths have risen by nearly 30 percent since 2013.

The major cause of death in children aged 1 to 19 years is not cancer or other another medical condition. It's injury. And by a long shot – 61 percent, versus 9 percent for cancer.

The largest cause of injury was motor vehicle crashes, and next was firearms, according to a study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study sorts through the 20,360 deaths of U.S. children and adolescents in 2016, as counted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
