National Drug Take-Back Day provides safe disposal of unwanted medications

U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency

The 23rd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is happening this Saturday from 10-2, with dozens of sites in Central Ohio.

The CDC estimates that 107,622 people died of drug poisoning last year. Take Back Day was designed to help people safely clean out medicine cabinets, while keeping dangerous chemicals out of the waste stream.

Prescription tablets, capsules and patches will be accepted, as well as liquid products like cough syrup will be accepted in the original closed packaging.

Vaping cartridges and devices with the batteries will also be accepted, but syringes and sharps will not.

The DEA, SWACO and local law enforcement will staff the collection sites, which include health, fire and police departments, and many Kroger grocery stores. A searchable map of locations is available here.
