Study: Fewer Child Mood Disorders Treated With Medication

Cleveland Clinic physician Joe Austerman says a new study shows fewer kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and other mood disorders are being treated with medication.

Austerman says researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital examined kids ages two-to-five-years, and the rates at which they were prescribed psychotropic drugs. Peak use was between 2002 and 2005. Rates then fell slightly from 2006 to 2009. Austerman says parents should have their children evaluated at an early age.

Results of the study are published in the journal "Pediatrics."
