The NCAA has released a list of 954 football teams it says have overachieved academically. Ohio State had an academic progress rate of 988 out of 1-thousand over the four-year period from 2007-11, while the Miami University Redhawks had a score of 980. Each player may earn one point per semester for remaining academically eligible and another point for staying in school, for a maximum of four points per player. The NCAA annually recognizes teams with perfect scores and those that finish in the top 10 percent. OSU athletic director Gene Smith serves on the NCAA men's basketball selection committee and its division one administration cabinet. He has served in the past on several other NCAA committees.
