Leaders in a northeast Ohio city have voted to place an oil and gas drilling ban question on the November ballot.
Transcript:
The Broadview Heights City Council voted 6-0 on Tuesday on an initiative for a city charter amendment prohibiting future drilling as part of a Community Bill of Rights. The amendment also would say city residents have a right to clean air, clean water, clean soil and a sustainable energy future. Concerned citizens' group Mothers Against Drilling in our Neighborhoods this summer circulated petitions that contained 1,519 valid signatures, meeting thresholds laid out in the city charter and Ohio law. Drilling has been pervasive in the suburban Cleveland community, with 90 active oil and gas wells in its 13 square miles. The energy industry says the drilling is safe.
