Cleanup Underway for Former Moraine Junkyard

Federal and state environmental officials are working to clean up a site in Moraine containing rusted drums of arsenic and lead that could affect the region's drinking water.

A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official says the cleanup is expected to take several months. The property is near the Opossum Creek tributary of the Great Miami River. The illegal dump site was designated a Superfund site after a December investigation found it contained between 50 to 100 drums of lead-based ink or paint and 80 thousand scrap tires. Officials believe the property may have been a junkyard decades ago.
