A dozen Cleveland police supervisors are facing disciplinary action for their roles in the November chase and shooting of two unarmed African-Americans. Police Chief Michael McGrath says one captain, one lieutenant and ten sergeants did not follow pursuit policies.
Dozens of officers involved in the chase are also facing disciplinary action. An internal review shows more than 100 officers and supervisors were involved in the 22 minute chase. Afterward, 13 mostly while officers fired more than 130 shots, killing 43-year-old Timothy Russell and 30-year-old Malissa Williams. But Chief McGrath says he has complete confidence in his supervisors.
All future cases of police use of deadly force will now go to the Cuyahoga County prosecutor, rather than the city prosecutor, to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
