Gee Delayed Apologies For Controversial Remarks

Records obtained by the Associated Press show former Ohio State University President Gordon Gee took his time apologizing for remarks made in December that were critical of Roman Catholics, the University of Notre Dame and Southeastern Conference schools.Gee waited several weeks to start the process despite a March letter from university trustees directing him to begin promptly. Trustees learned of the remarks in January. A copy of Gee's calendar shows he began apologizing after the AP made a request for the audiotape of the December meeting of the Athletics Council where Gee made the critical comments. Gee waited more than two months before visiting Notre Dame's president and calling the SEC commissioner. Gee retired July 1st. He announced his retirement in June, days after the remarks became public.
