Heroin Sweep Nets 32 Gang Members

Thirty-two people have been charged in a federal and state sweep against suspected heroin traffickers in lakefront communities in northeast Ohio. U.S. Attorney Steven Dettlebach says the arrests involve members of the Lakeshore Boyz Gang operating in suburban Cleveland and Euclid.

Euclid Mayor Bill Cervenik says the gang members sold heroin along highways and within a thousand yards of school buildings.

Last month 92 people were indicted in a Cleveland-area heroin bust. Dettlebach says Cuyahoga County is on pace for 200 heroin-related deaths this year, up from 40 in 2007.

Dettlebach is asking doctors to limit prescribing painkillers, calling them gateways to heroin abuse. A summit on the heroin epidemic is scheduled for November.
