Case Of Surrendered Child Raises Questions About Adoptions

The case of an Ohio couple who face abandonment charges for giving their 9-year-old adopted son to child welfare officials has sparked concerns among adoptees, adoptive parents and others. Authorities say the suburban Cincinnati couple left the boy they had raised since infancy with children's services, citing what they called aggressive behavior. National advocates say failed adoptions or dissolutions are rare in cases where the child has been raised from infancy. They and others in the adoption community are concerned about trauma to the child. But some also fear that prosecuting the parents might deter other adoptive parents from seeking help. The parents are due in Butler County court Wednesday on misdemeanor counts of nonsupport of dependents.
