Dayton Schools Seek Volunteers For Immigrant Students

The Dayton schools are appealing for more volunteers to help students who left troubled homelands. The district has 105 student refugees eligible for help through a federally subsidized program. Twenty came from Iraq, and most others are from African nations. They have fled war and persecution, and students often have been out of school for long periods because of turmoil. Those who want to become mentors are trained in teaching English as a Second Language, literacy and also get a "Refugee 101" class through Catholic Social Services. Federal funds have helped with startup costs and hiring an administrator.
