Ice Covers 87 Percent Of The Great Lakes

The Great Lakes are almost completely covered with ice for the first time in 20 years.Officials at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory say as of Wednesday, 87 percent of the lakes were ice covered. In 1994, 94 percent of the lakes' surface was frozen. Scientists say over the past four decades, the average ice cover has receded 70 percent, in part because of global climate change. Scientists also say the ice cover may help replenish water levels by limiting evaporation, and could help sustain some species of wildlife.
