John Wise at trial in the murder of his wife

A 68-year-old Ohio man imprisoned for fatally shooting his ailing wife in her hospital bed has died while serving his six-year sentence.

A prisons spokesperson says John Wise of Massillon had been in a prison medical center in Columbus and died Monday at a hospital emergency room. Wise's attorney say he apparently suffered cardiac arrest. Wise said he shot his debilitated wife out of love in 2012 after she suffered an aneurysm and appeared to be in pain at an Akron hospital. Mercy is not a defense to a murder charge in Ohio.Wise was sentenced in December and had applied for clemency. He apologized  for the shooting and said he'd been depressed and desperate. His attorney says the parole board hearing was scheduled for  August.
