Suspected Car Thief Wounded After Trying To Run Down Officer

Columbus police say an officer fired shots at a suspected vehicle thief who drove a van at the officer Monday morning.

Police Sergeant Rich Weiner, says it happened when officers were investigating some car thefts on the West side.   Officers were keeping an eye on a stolen van when a man drove up in another vehicle and got into the van. When an officer tried to make the arrest, the suspect drove the van at the officer, who fired multiple times at the van.  The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Rondale Johnson, drove off before crashing the van a short time later. He was hospitalized with injuries, but it wasn't immediately clear whether he was hurt in the shooting or the subsequent crash.
