The mayor of Toledo is in critical condition after suffering a heart attack while driving around the city checking on road conditions during a snow storm.
Doctors say 70-year-old Michael Collins crashed into a utility pole around 2 p.m. Sunday after going into cardiac arrest. A passer-by who saw the mayor's crashed SUV gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency personnel arrived. Collins wasn't conscious at the time. Collins is being treated at the University of Toledo Medical Center's intensive care unit. Doctors say he is being heavily sedated and closely monitored, and it's too early to give a prognosis on his recovery. City Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson was sworn in Sunday as acting mayor. Collins, a retired police officer and former city councilman, became mayor in January 2014.
