1 Dead, 18 Sick With Botulism Symptoms

A hospital says one person has died and at least 18 others are ill with suspected food-borne botulism after a church picnic in central Ohio.

The Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster says in a release that three people were in intensive care Tuesday night, 10 were taken to other hospitals and five were being treated in the hospital's emergency department. The hospital believes all of them were among 50 to 60 people who attended a church potluck picnic at Cross Pointe Free Will Baptist Church on Sunday. Symptoms of the paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin in food include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids and difficulty swallowing. The state and local health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are assisting the hospital.
