The mayor of Vermillion says a police captain placed on leave for wearing a pin on his uniform supporting marijuana legalization has been fired for several departmental violations. Captain Michael Reinheimer has been terminated for wearing the button on duty, several rules violations and allegations about his handling of his role as senior firearms instructor. Reinheimer was also charged with driving under suspension earlier this year. He supported legal marijuana because he says his wife has epilepsy and he read that marijuana can be effective in preventing seizures when prescription medication fails to work. Reinheimer says he will appeal his termination to the city's Civil Service Commission. He says if the commission upholds his termination, he will file a lawsuit to get his job back.
