1959 Prison Camp Escapee Gets Parole

cbsnews.com

The Ohio Parole board yesterday granted parole to the man who disappeared from a prison camp in 1959 while serving time for manslaughter. 79-year-old Frank Freshwaters will be released April 24. He was found last year living in rural Florida. The conditions for his release include five years of supervision. Prosecutors said Freshwaters changed his name, avoided accountability and never paid the restitution ordered for his victim's family. Tim Robbins' character in the move The Shawshank Redemption was loosely based on Freshwaters.
