Local Man Gets 19 Year Prison Sentence For Killing His Father

Franklin County Sheriff's Office

A Franklin County judge on Wednesday sentenced a Columbus man found guilty of shooting and killing his father during an argument at their South Linden home in 2015 to 19 years in prison. Joseph Shine-Johnson claimed he acted in self-defense when he killed 59-year-old Joseph Bythewood at the Grasmere Avenue home. Shine-Johnson said his father was standing in the back door pointing a shotgun at him. Bythewood was unarmed and the two were arguing over money, according to prosecutors.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
