BBB Warns Of Hurricane Harvey Donation Scams

checkboxaccounting.com

The Better Business Bureau is warning Ohioans about potential Hurricane Harvey donation scams.  Spokesperson Sue McConnell says fake social media ads will take consumers to fraudulent websites claiming to accept donations for Harvey victims. But those sites do not deliver the donations.

McConnell says phishing email scams will also be prevalent, and she warns people not to donate gift cards.

McConnell recommends researching any organization before making a cash donation. After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, the federal government created the Disaster Fraud Task Force to prosecute such crimes. Since its creation, more than 14-hundred people have been prosecuted.
