Kasich Signs Bill Creating 'Charles Follis Day' In Ohio

footballperspective.com

Ohio Governor John Kasich has signed into law a bill designating February 3 each year as Charles FollisDay.

It honors the first documented, black professional football player known by the nickname "The Black Cyclone."  Follis was born on February 3, 1879, and helped organize the first varsity football team at Wooster High School in 1899. Follis played with an amateur Wooster team and in 1904 signed a contract with the Shelby Blues of the American Professional Football Association. He sustained a career-ending injury a few years later and began playing baseball before he died from pneumonia in 1910 at age 31.
