An affordable housing complex for seniors held its grand opening today in Columbus.
Mike Foley reports.
Fairwood Commons sits on a two-acre, once blighted patch of land in the Franklin Park neighborhood. The 54-unit development marks Ohio's first Passive House certified multifamily property. Officials with Columbus-based Woda Cooper Companies say the philosophy and design uses superior insulation and air tightness, along with high-performance windows, proper orientation and enhanced shading to significantly reduce heating and cooling consumption and utility costs. Officials say Fairwood Commons will be affordable for residents living at or below 60 percent of the area's median income. The project received Low Income Housing Tax Credits from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency and a 15-year tax abatement from the City of Columbus.
