Pike County Deputy Resigns After Beating Restrained Jail Inmate

Pike County Prosecutor's Office

A Pike County Sheriff’s deputy has resigned after he was caught on video repeatedly hitting a jail  inmate who was strapped to a restraining chair last month.

Jeremy Mooney resigned prior to his disciplinary hearing. His supervisor, Sergeant Bill Stansberry, has been placed on leave and demoted to corporal for failing to stop the beating of Thomas Friend. Prosecutors will determine if criminal charges will be filed.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
