Ukrainian Group Plans Saturday Vigil At OSU

Facebook

A public vigil and memorial rally is scheduled Saturday at the OSU Student Union among Columbus residents who will join the global Ukrainian diaspora, honoring those killed by Russian government forces.

The event comes against the backdrop of more fighting between government and rebel forces today. Jim Letizia reports.

The event sponsored by the Ukrainian Cultural Association of Ohio is scheduled for 2pm. NPR and the Association Press report artillery fire in the rebel stronghold of Donetsk killed at least 12 civilians today as the fighting between pro-Russian separatists and government troops intensifies. Five people were killed early this afternoon as they were waiting for humanitarian aid outside a community center. Two people were killed when a mortar shell landed near a bus stop. Five other people died today in sporadic artillery fire west of Donetsk. Fighting erupted anew earlier this month following a period of relative tranquility. Diplomatic sources say U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russia's Prime Minister could meet next week to discuss the hostilities.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
