Winter High School Sports Tournaments Canceled

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has canceled all winter sports tournaments. The start of the spring sports season remains indefinitely postponed, according to OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass.

I’ve heard from so many students about how important a softball game is, a track meet, competing for a state title in hockey, that wrestler who worked so hard to get to the state tournament – how important that is in their lives,” Snodgrass said. “None of us will ever underestimate that. I’m a parent. I was a teacher, a coach, and an administrator. I think I understand that as well as anyone. All decisions are not going to be made on emotions. We have to make the best judgments based upon fighting that war as the governor indicated. I know the emotion that goes with it. But again, it’s being denied by something bigger than all of us.”

Snodgrass say no state champions will be listed for the four winter sports tournaments affected - hockey, wrestling and girls and boys basketball. Officials say those four tournaments and a just few events during World War 2 are the only sports cancellations in the history of the athletic association, founded in 1907. The economic impact on the organization, just from canceling the winter sports tournaments, has been estimated at $1.5 million.
