Columbus City Council last night approved a measure forming a group to develop education standards charter schools must meet if they want to receive a portion of the money from the Columbus City Schools levy on the November ballot. Council President and former Columbus school board member Andy Ginther says the 15-member group will hold public hearings in November and develop the standards by the end of the year.
The timetable means voters will not know those standards when they go to the polls on November 5th. The standards will also cover the Columbus schools. The Columbus school board is expected to approve a similar measure tonight. Council must approve the group's recommendations. Mayor Michael Coleman has said levy money will go only to nonprofit charter schools. Council also approved a memo of understanding with Franklin County Metroparks to extend the city’s multi-purpose trail system on the West side. Recreation and Parks Director Alan McKnight.
The legislation authorizes the city to spend 510 thousand dollars in bond revenue on costs related to acquiring the lease.
