State Considers Storage Lagoons For Fracking Wastewater

State officials are considering rules for storage sites containing fracking wastewater. Lagoons the size of football fields could store millions of gallons of the chemically-laced fluids used to free gas trapped deep below the earth's surface. Companies then clean the water so it can be used again. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is drafting standards for the construction of the lagoons and their length of use. Agency officials were directed in the state budget to establish rules and permits. Environmental advocates say the lagoons pose a threat to groundwater. An industry group says the lagoons would have plastic liners to prevent leaks.
