Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman's 2014 city budget proposal raises spending on public safety by $15 million. 70 percent of Columbus' budget next year is devoted to public safety. Coleman's plan includes funding for 70 police recruits and 40 firefighter recruits. Yet the Columbus Firefighters Union has said the city has failed to budget enough money to keep up with firefighter attrition over the last several years. The union has also said the city will wind up with fewer firefighters on the payroll next year than in 2013, even with the addition of the class of recruits. In the final installment of WCBE's annual end-of-the-year interview with the Mayor, Coleman talks with Jim Letizia about the union's claims, as well as efforts to recruit more minorities to the police and fire ranks.
