A federal judge has reject a request for a new trial for the former Toledo-area coin dealer and Republican party fundraiser at the center of a state investment scandal.
A federal district judge in Akron turned down Tom Noe's appeal on Tuesday to overturn his conviction and grant a new trial. The judge agreed with a recommendation from a federal magistrate judge who said that Noe didn't prove his arguments that he was denied a fair trial. Noe had argued the trial should have been moved out of Toledo because of pre-trial publicity. Noe was convicted of stealing from a $50 million rare-coin fund he oversaw for the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation. He's serving an 18-year prison term.
