Ohio To Study 3 Types Of Prison Security Drones

Ohio's prisons agency says it will study three types of drones as it weighs whether to use the devices to keep an eye on inmates in two prisons.

The Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections says a request for proposal will be made for a company to assess a tethered balloon, a fixed-wing vehicle and a helicopter-like device beginning in November. Ed Voorhies, the agency's operations managing director, said Wednesday the agency also has begun testing a type of sensor that might be used on one of the devices. The agency has said infrared sensors could be used to detect people outside fences approaching at night to throw over contraband. If adopted the drones would be used at Lebanon and Warren correctional facilities in southwest Ohio.
